Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French maronite.
Etymology: < Middle French maronite (1489 as noun, 1535 as adjective) < post-classical Latin Maronita (12th cent.), probably < an unattested Byzantine Greek compound in -ίτης -ite suffix1 (compare the verb Μαρωνίζειν (a749)) < the name of Maron, southern Syrian priest and anchorite, who corresponded with St John Chrysostom c405.The early history of the sect is obscure. The first Maronite patriarch appears to have been John of Maron (7th cent.).
