Etymology: < the name of the Marquesas Islands, a pair of small archipelagoes in French Polynesia in the South Pacific (named in 1595 after the Marquesa de Mendoza (see marquesa n.), whose husband, Don García Hurtado de Mendoza, viceroy of Peru, was patron of the voyage on which they were discovered) + -an suffix.
