Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French méhari.
Etymology: < French méhari dromedary (1637 in form mahari, probably via Spanish; 1753 in form maihari; 1822 in form meherry; 1849 in form méhari, plural méhara) < Arabic mahrī (also with regional pronunciation mehrī; plural mahārā, mahārī), use as noun of mahrī (adjective) of or relating to Mahra, a tribal region of southern Arabia famed for its highly prized camels.Mahra camels are mentioned in the earliest biography of the Prophet Muhammad; they were prized by the caliphs and celebrated by ancient poets. They spread into North Africa with the medieval westward migration of Bedouin from Arabia.
In North Africa and the Middle East: a dromedary, used for riding and racing.
