Etymology: < ancient Greek μείζων greater, comparative of μέγας great (see mega- comb. form) + ancient Greek σεισμός earthquake (see seismic adj.) + -al suffix¹ (see quot. 1851). Compare coseismal adj. and later mesoseismal adj., seismal adj.

Relating to the points of maximum disturbance in an earthquake; spec. designating a region that has undergone maximum disturbance in an earthquake. Also as n. (rare).
