Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin melaena.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin melaena (F. B. Sauvages de la Croix Nosologia Methodica (1768) II. 332) < ancient Greek μέλαινα disease characterized by bloody vomit (in the Hippocratic corpus), use as noun (short for μέλαινα νοῦσος black disease) of the feminine of μέλας black (see melano- comb. form). Compare post-classical Latin melaenus, adjective (4th cent., modifying cholera bile). Compare French mélène (1803), mélaena, mélèna (1806).
Pathology.
1. Originally: †a disease characterized by the vomiting and evacuation from the bowels of dark bloody matter (obsolete). Now: the passing of dark tarry faeces containing partly digested blood as a symptom of disease (usually resulting from haemorrhage in the upper gastrointestinal tract).
