Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin melampodium.
Etymology: < classical Latin melampodium, melampodion < Hellenistic Greek μελαμπόδιον < ancient Greek μελαμ- (see melano- comb. form) + πόδιον (see podium n.). Compare slightly earlier melampode n.Pliny ( Nat. Hist. 25. 47) derives the word from the name of Melampūs, a mythical soothsayer and healer.

1931 M. Grieve Mod. Herbal I. 388/1 According to Pliny, Black Hellebore was used as a purgative in mania by Melampus,..1,400 years before Christ, hence the name Melampodium applied to Hellebores.
