Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown; perhaps < a personal name (see quot. 1923 at sense 2). Compare slightly earlier marrowskying n.In 1848 described by Albert Smith as Gower Street dialect, and in quot. 1860 at marrowskying n. as medical Greek (see medical Greek n. at medical adj. and n. Compounds). The identification with Joseph Boruwlaski (1739–1837) suggested in the source cited in quot. 1923 at sense 2 appears to be unsupported.
Now rare.
1. A variety of slang, or a slip in speaking, characterized by the transposition of the initial letters or syllables of two (consecutive) words. Occasionally in marrowsky language. Cf. spoonerism n. (now the more usual word).
