Etymology: < French Marseillais, †Marseillois Marseillais adj. Originally in compound Marseillais hymn; subsequently in form Marseillaise after the French feminine form (see below).The Marseillaise was originally called in French Chant de guerre pour l'armée du Rhin (1792; see below); the title La Marche des Marseillois is also attested in the year of composition, and l'hymne des Marseillais in 1795; the usual modern form la Marseillaise is not attested in French until 1832.
Also Marseillaise hymn. A French revolutionary marching song written and composed by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, a military engineer in the Rhine army, in 1792 on the declaration of war against Austria, initially popular among volunteer army units from Marseilles, and adopted as the French national anthem in 1795.
