Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mastigophora.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mastigophora (K. M. Diesing 1865, in Sitzungsber. der Kaiserl. Akad. der Wissensch. (Math.-Nat. Classe: Abt. I) 52 294) < ancient Greek μαστιγοϕόρος whip-bearing (see mastigophorous adj.).
Biology.
With plural agreement. A group of single-celled eukaryotic organisms characterized by the possession of one or more flagella used for locomotion, at some stage in their life cycle.Formerly regarded as a subphylum of protozoans, and also known as the class Flagellata. Members of this group are now divided among several new phyla of the kingdom Protista.
