Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mastigura.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mastigura ( J. Fleming Philos. Zool. (1822) II. 277) < ancient Greek μαστιγ- , μάστιξ whip (see -mastix comb. form) + οὐρά tail (see uro- comb. form2). Compare earlier uromastix n.
A lizard of the Old World genus Uromastyx (family Agamidae), with a thick, spiny tail; esp. U. acanthinura of North Africa. Also called spiny-tailed lizard.
