Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mastodonte.
Etymology: < French mastodonte (Cuvier 1806, in Ann. du muséum d'hist. nat. de Paris 8 270) < masto- masto- comb. form2 + -odonte -odont comb. form, with reference to the nipple-like tubercles present in pairs on the crowns of the molar teeth. Compare slightly later mastodon n.

An extinct mammal of the order Proboscidea, related to the elephants and mammoths; esp. one of the family Mammutidae (formerly Mastodontidae) which comprises the true mastodons.
