Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin mastoideus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mastoideus relating to the mastoid (17th cent. or earlier; < ancient Greek μαστοειδής mastoid adj. and n. + post-classical Latin -eus : see -eous suffix) + -an suffix. Compare French mastoïdien (1654 or earlier), and earlier mastoidal adj., mastoideal adj. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mæstoi·diăn) /mæˈstɔɪdɪən/.
