Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin māteria , -ature suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin māteria matter n.1 + -ature suffix, after German Materiatur (1801 in Hegel). Compare classical Latin māteriātūra woodwork, carpentry (Vitruvius).
Now rare.
Esp. in Hegelian philosophy: that which constitutes materiality.
