Etymology: < Middle French, French massif (although only recorded from 1546 of architecture; 1796 of high ground, 1832 of flowers), use as noun of massif massive adj.Continuity of use from the 16th cent. is unlikely.
1. A large building, or a range of buildings regarded as a single block. Also: a mass of masonry or rock. (In later use generally understood as a figurative use of sense 2.)
