Etymology: < Portuguese Martabana, short for jarra Martabana Martaban jar (16th cent.) < Martabão , the name of a port in Burma (Myanmar); in form Martaban subsequently assimilated to the English form of the place name. Compare Urdu martabān glazed earthenware or porcelain jar, Persian martabān , marṭabān , Arabic marṭabān (14th cent.). See H. Yule and A. C. Burnell Hobson-Jobson (1886), s.v.
