单词 marter
释义

martern.1

Forms: Middle English martre, late Middle English martir, late Middle English matre, late Middle English–1500s marter, late Middle English–1500s martyr.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French martre.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French martre marten (c1100; also ‘marten's fur’ c1170), cognate with post-classical Latin martor (a1072), martur (a1081; 1431 in a British source), martira (a1124, a1180 in British sources) < Old High German mardar , marder , mardur (Middle High German marder , German Marder ) or an unrecorded Germanic cognate (Middle Dutch, Dutch marter is < French; see marten n. for a possible Old Saxon form). The Old High German word appears to represent an extended form of the Germanic base of Old English mearþ (see below), Old Icelandic mǫrðr (genitive marðar, dative merði; Icelandic mörður), Swedish mård, Danish mår; further etymology uncertain. Romance derivatives of one or more of these Germanic forms include Portuguese marta (1452), Spanish marta (1495), and Middle French, French marte (1549).This word superseded Old English mearþ , and was itself superseded by marten n. by the end of the 16th cent. Old English mearþ , mærþ , merþ survived into the Middle English period in the compound foumart n., in place names, e.g. Mardeleebury (Hertfordshire, 1367; now Mardleybury), and probably in the compound spelt metheschele (the second element is chel n.) in the Trinity Coll. MS (a1200) of the Poema Morale. In form martyr perhaps partly after martyr n.
Obsolete.
1. = marten n. 2a.
