单词 matador
释义

matadorn.adj.

Brit. /ˈmatədɔː/, U.S. /ˈmædəˌdɔr/
Forms: 1600s–1800s matadore, 1600s– matador, 1700s mattador, 1700s mattadore.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish matador.
Etymology: < Spanish matador killer (11th cent.), matador (16th cent. in senses A. 1 and A. 3) < matar to kill (see mate v.1) + -ador -ator suffix.Compare classical Latin mactātor slaughterer (one isolated attestation) < mactāre to kill + -ātor -ator suffix; neither of these classical Latin words seems to be represented in any of the Romance languages, and their resemblance to the Spanish forms is probably coincidental.
