Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly (i) a borrowing from French. Probably partly (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: French mateologien ; Greek μάταιος , -logian comb. form.
Etymology: < Middle French mateologien (1532 in Rabelais) < ancient Greek ματαιολόγος (adjective) talking at random (Hellenistic Greek in the New Testament; < ancient Greek μάταιος vain (see mataeology n.) + -λόγος speaking: see -logy comb. form) + French -ien -ian suffix, probably after théologien theologian n. In quot. 1899 probably re-formed < ancient Greek μάταιος + -logian comb. form, after theologian n. Compare mataeology n.
