单词 matafunda
释义

matafundan.

Brit. /matəˈfʌndə/, U.S. /ˌmædəˈfəndə/
Forms:

α. 1700s– matafunda, 1800s mate-funda.

β. 1700s matafund.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin matafunda.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin matafunda a stone-throwing military engine (13th cent.), further etymology uncertain; compare Old French macefonde (late 12th cent.), Middle French machefonde (15th cent.). The first element may be identical with that of machecole v. (in C. d'Aquino Lexicon Militare (1724), and perhaps in quot. 1796, it is interpreted as classical Latin mactare , which is implausible: see note s.v. matador n.; in quot. 1860 it is interpreted as identical with the first element of mate-griffon n.); the second is probably < classical Latin funda sling (see fundiform adj.). N.E.D. (1905) enters this under matafund and gives the pronunciation as (mæ·tăfɒnd) /ˈmætəfʌnd/.
A type of military engine (probably: the trebuchet).
