Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mauvaise foi.
Etymology: < French mauvaise foi, lit. ‘bad faith’ (first used in this sense by J.-P. Sartre in L'être et le néant (1943) i. ii. 85; a1680 in phrase être de mauvaise foi ‘to be lacking in sincerity’) < mauvaise , feminine of mauvais bad (see mauvasty n.) + foi faith (see foy n.1).
Philosophy.
In the existentialist philosophy of Sartre: the self-deception practised by a person who wishes to avoid absolute responsibility for his or her own actions by not recognizing that human beings have free will and that no relationship is genuinely mutual. Also (in extended use): bad faith, disingenuousness.
