Etymology: < me- (in methyl n.) + but- (in butyl n.) + -amate (in carbamate n. at carbamide n. Derivatives), probably after meprobamate n.
Pharmacology.
A compound with sedative and anti-hypertensive properties, administered orally in the treatment of hypertension; 2-sec-butyl-2-methyltrimethylene dicarbamate, C10H20N2O4.

1961 New Scientist 21 Sept. 702/3 The best way of attempting to treat hypertension would appear to be to damp down the impulses emanating from this [vasomotor] centre. This can now be done by means of the drug mebutamate, which was discovered by Dr. F. M. Berger and his colleagues.
1967 Canad. Med. Assoc. Jrnl. 97 397/2 Mebutamate, a drug with a chemical structure analogous to that of meprobamate, possesses interesting hypnotic properties at doses which we used, 600 and 800 mg.
1972 Materials & Technol. V. xxi. 791 Mebutamate, a derivative of the tranquilliser meprobamate, and hydrallazine directly reduce the vasomotor centre activity.
