Physics. mechanical equivalent: the amount of mechanical effect resulting from the operation of a force. mechanical equivalent of heat: conventionally, the amount of mechanical energy required to raise 1 lb. of water through 1° C.; cf. joule n.; mechanical equivalent of light: the amount of radiant flux that corresponds to unit luminous flux (or, in quot. 19082, that is emitted by a source of unit luminous intensity), usually expressed in watts per lumen.
