Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mechano- comb. form, -graphy comb. form.
Etymology: < mechano- comb. form + -graphy comb. form. Compare German Mechanographik (1800), French mécanographie production of written text by mechanical means (1832), and earlier mechanographia n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mekănǫ·grăfi) /mɛkəˈnɒɡrəfɪ/.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
The art or process of copying or reproducing a work of art, piece of writing, etc., by mechanical means.

1840 B. H. Smart Walker's Crit. Pronouncing Dict. at Mechanic Mechanography, is the art of imitating paintings by mechanical means.
