Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mechlin.
Etymology: < Mechlin (Dutch Mechelen, post-classical Latin Mechlinia (15th cent. in a British source)), former name of Mechelen, a city in Flanders (now in Belgium).In β. forms in -a- and γ. forms with final -s probably after Malines , the name of the city in French (see Malines n.), or post-classical Latin variants such as Machlinium, Maslinas, Mallines.
