Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: ballista n., -ier suffix.
Etymology: < ballista n. + -ier suffix, after classical Latin ballistārius soldier who worked or discharged a ballista (2nd cent. a.d.), in post-classical Latin also crossbowman (frequently from 1086 in British sources). Compare earlier balister n.1 and the Romance nouns cited at that entry.
Obsolete.
A soldier who operates or discharges a ballista. Cf. balister n.1
