Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ballonnet.
Etymology: < French ballonnet (although this is apparently first attested later in the relevant sense: 1899 or earlier; 1874 in sense ‘small spherical vial used in physical and chemical experiments’) < ballon balloon n. + -et -et suffix1. Compare earlier balloonet n.A form *ballonette or *ballonnette (compare e.g. quot. 1869) is not attested in French.
A separate gas- or air-filled compartment or small balloon within the main envelope of a balloon or airship, esp. one designed for the maintenance or adjustment of the envelope's shape, buoyancy, or orientation.
