Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mazagran.
Etymology: < French mazagran (1864; in early use in senses ‘iced coffee served in a deep vessel, with water added’ and ‘coffee, hot or cold, served in a thick china goblet (with or without brandy)’; 1879 in sense ‘goblet in which this is served’, now the usual meaning in French) < Mazagran, the name of a village in Algeria (in the vicinity of the coastal town of Mostaganem) in which a memorable siege was upheld by the French garrison in 1840.
Iced black coffee laced with brandy or rum, traditionally served in an earthenware goblet and drunk through a straw.
