Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mecoptera.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Mecoptera < meco- meco- comb. form + ancient Greek πτερόν wing (see ptero- comb. form), with reference to the long wings of these insects.The word was introduced by U.S. entomologist and invertebrate zoologist Alphaeus Spring Packard (1839–1905) in the form Mecaptera (compare quots. 1886, 1911), but subsequently adopted in emended form.

Entomology.

With plural agreement. A small order of predatory insects having biting mouthparts at the tip of a downward-pointing beak, and usually having two pairs of transparent wings; members of this order.The Mecoptera comprise the scorpion flies and hanging flies, and (usually) the snow fleas. They were formerly considered to belong to the Neuroptera but are now regarded as a primitive order allied to the ancestors of the Diptera and Lepidoptera.
