Etymology: < medal n. + of prep. + honour n.
Also more fully Congressional Medal of Honour. The highest decoration in the U.S. armed forces, consisting of a five-pointed star on a blue ribbon, awarded for courage in action. Also in extended use.The Medal of Honour was introduced in the U.S. Navy in December 1861 and extended to the Army in 1862 and the Air Force in 1956. Quot. 18611 is from a bogus report and does not appear to refer to any actual medal.
