Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian medaglione.
Etymology: < Italian medaglione large medal (1618; 1550 denoting a painted or sculpted figure in a cornice as an architectural ornament) < medaglia medal n. + -one -oon suffix. Compare Middle French, French médaillon large medal (1554), bas-relief in circular form (1740). With sense 2 compare slightly earlier médaillon n.In form medaillon in 18th cent. remodelled after French médaillon.

a. A large medal, usually one larger than 100 mm (4 inches) in diameter; (now frequently) a medal worn as an ornament on a chain around the neck. Also: (by extension) any medal. [Erroneously explained in Blount Glossogr. 1661 as ‘a little medal’, after Cotgrave's erroneous rendering of médaillon.]
