Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: medal n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < medal n. + -ist suffix. Compare Italian medaglista collector of medals (14th cent.), engraver of medals (1899), French médailliste collector of medals (1609 as médalliste), engraver of medals (1690).In form medaillist in 17th cent. probably remodelled after French médailliste . Compare also French médailleur collector of medals (1769), engraver of medals (1812, but attested earlier in a German context as Medailleur (1751 in the passage translated in quot. 1757 at sense 1)).
