Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. meditemporal Brit. /ˌmiːdɪˈtɛmp(ə)rəl/, /ˌmiːdɪˈtɛmp(ə)rl̩/, U.S. /ˌmidiˈtɛmp(ə)rəl/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin medi-.
Etymology: < classical Latin medi- (in e.g. mediterrāneus (see Mediterranean adj.), meditullium meditullium n.), combining form of medius (see medium n.).Attested from the early 19th cent. in entomological terms, as meditrunk n.; compare also mediglacial adj.
Forming adjectives and nouns with the sense ‘in the middle of’; = medio- comb. form 1b.In anatomy (esp. in describing the anatomy of the head) and entomology, perhaps used deliberately to avoid confusion with medio- in the sense ‘medial and ——’ (medio- comb. form 1a).
