Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish medialuna.
Etymology: < Spanish medialuna, media luna, lit. ‘half-moon’ (1609 in this sense) < media , feminine of medio half (see medio n.) + luna moon ( < classical Latin lūna luna n.). Compare mezzaluna n.
Bullfighting. Now historical.
An instrument consisting of a crescent-shaped blade attached to a long wooden pole, formerly used in bullfighting to hamstring a bull which could not be overcome by other means.
