Etymology: < melano- comb. form + cerite n.¹, after Danish melanocerit (W. C. Brögger 1887, in Geol. Föreningens i Stockholm Förhandl. 9 251). Compare French mélanocérite (1845 in different sense).

Mineralogy.

A translucent resinous fluosilicate of cerium and calcium occurring as black or brown tabular crystals of the trigonal system.

1985 Amer. Mineralogist 70 1059/1 Brøgger..expressed some doubt concerning the status of freyalite, and suggested that the mineral might be classified with tritomite or melanocerite rather than with thorite.
