单词 melanochroi
释义

Melanochroin.

Brit. /mɛləˈnɒkrəʊʌɪ/, /mɛləˈnɒkrɔɪ/, U.S. /mɛləˈnɑkroʊˌaɪ/, /mɛləˈnɑkrɔɪ/
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: melano- comb. form, Greek ὠχροί.
Etymology: < melano- comb. form + ancient Greek ὠχροί, masculine plural of ὠχρός pale (see ochre n.).The sense in quot. 1878 implies a false etymology < ancient Greek μελανόχροι , masculine plural of μελανόχροος dark-complexioned < μελανο- melano- comb. form + χρόα skin. Huxley's coinage is unusual in showing the Greek plural form rather than substitution of -i after Latin; compare also Melanoi n., Xanthochroi n.
Physical Anthropology. Now historical.
With plural agreement. In T. H. Huxley's classification of the varieties of humankind: a subdivision of the smooth-haired class Leiotrichi with dark hair and eyes, and a pale complexion.By some later writers taken as connoting a dark complexion (see etymological note above).
