Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: melano- comb. form, Greek κόμη , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < melano- comb. form + ancient Greek κόμη hair (see comous adj.) + -ous suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek or Byzantine Greek μελανοκόμης, variant (in some texts of Pollux the grammarian) of Hellenistic Greek μελαγκόμης. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (melănǫ·kŏməs) /mɛləˈnɒkəməs/.
