Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mélanourine.
Etymology: < French mélanourine (H. Braconnot 1825, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 29 259) < mélano- melano- comb. form + urine urine n.1, after cyanourine cyanurin n. With the form melanurin compare German Melanurin (1840 or earlier). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (melăniūə·rin) /mɛləˈnjʊərɪn/.
Chemistry. Obsolete.
A constituent of urine which darkens on oxidation, perhaps potassium indoxylsulphate (‘indican of urine’). Cf. melanic acid n. at melanic adj. 1.
