Etymology: < French mélaphyre (A. Brongniart 1813, in Jrnl. des mines 34 40) < ancient Greek μέλας black (see melano- comb. form) + -phyre (in French porphyre porphyry n.).

Geology.

Any of various dark-coloured porphyritic (esp. basaltic) rocks. Later: spec. an altered basalt, esp. of Carboniferous or Permian age.
