Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μέλασμα.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μέλασμα black spot < μελαίνειν to blacken ( < μελαν- , μέλας black: see melano- comb. form) + -σμα , extended form of -μα (see -oma comb. form). Compare post-classical Latin melasma kind of dark patch on the skin, dark spot occurring on the lower leg, especially of elderly people (1755 in B. Castelli Lexicon Medicum II. 137/2). With the form melasmus compare perhaps ancient Greek μελασμός blackening of the flesh.
Medicine.
Originally: †an ulcer caused by venous stasis (obsolete). Later: any of various disorders characterized by patchy or generalized hyperpigmentation of the skin; spec. hyperpigmentation of the face (also called chloasma).
