Etymology: < the name of Mazdak of Fasa (c450–524 or 528/9), Zoroastrian priest and reformer, and principal exponent of the movement + -ism suffix. Compare earlier Mazdakite n., Mazdakite adj.Compare French Mazdakisme (1852 or earlier), German Mazdakismus (1879 or earlier).
A dualist religious and philosophical movement, with Zoroastrian and Manichaean elements, which advocated social reform. Cf. Mazdakite n.The movement was founded in Persia (now Iran) in the late 5th and early 6th centuries, and survived until the 8th cent.
