Etymology: < Middle French, French maître d'hôtel major-domo, chief or officers' steward, later also head waiter (c1225 in Old French as mestre d'ostel major-domo) < maître overseer (see master n.1) + d' de prep. + hôtel mansion (see hotel n.).Probably in no period fully naturalized in English.
