Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mc-.
Etymology: < Mc-, common patronymic prefix in Scottish and Irish family names (see Mac n.1). In sense 2 < Mc- in the name of the McDonald's chain of fast-food restaurants (see McDonald's n.); for a discussion with extensive documentary evidence see Amer. Speech (1990) 65 349–66.
