Origin: Apparently a borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse ögn.
Etymology: apparently < Old Norse ögn, plural agnar strong (Swedish agn, Danish avn(e)); compare Old High German agana, Middle High German agene, agne, ane, modern German ahne, Gothic ahana. The Old English form does not occur.
The delicate spinous process, or ‘beard,’ that terminates the grain-sheath of barley, oats, and other grasses; extended in Botany to any similar bristly growth.

Etymology: Found in Ormin only. Of obscure formation; related to Gothic augjan , Old High German augan , ougan , Middle High German ougen , Old Saxon ôgian , Old Frisian auwa , Old English éawan (compare atew v.). Mätzner says that Middle High German had also a form ougenen as a variant of ougen.
