Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French mellifluent; Latin mellifluent-, mellifluens.
Etymology: < Middle French, French mellifluent sweet as honey, sweet, gentle (c1485) or its etymon post-classical Latin mellifluent-, mellifluens (isolated 4th–cent. attestation in Ausonius (other readings have been proposed); much less frequent than mellifluus : see mellifluous adj.) < classical Latin mell- , mel honey (see mell n.2) + fluent- , fluēns , present participle of fluere to flow (see fluent adj.).With application to St Bernard (see quot. 1623) compare etymological note s.v. mellifluous adj.
