Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin melligenus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin melligenus, scribal variant after genus ‘kind’ of classical Latin mellīginis , genitive singular of mellīgō (see melligineous adj.) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (meli·dʒĭnəs) /mɛˈlɪdʒɪnəs/.
Obsolete. rare.
Like or of the nature of honey; consisting of honey.
