Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mellites.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mellites (J. F. Gmelin in Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 13, 1793) III. 282) < classical Latin mell- , mel honey (see mell n.2) + -ītēs -ite suffix1, after German Honigstein (see honey stone n.). Compare honey stone n., mellilite n. and French mellite (1800).
Mineralogy.
Hydrated aluminium mellitate, Al2[C6(COO)6].18H2O, a tetragonal mineral occurring naturally as honey-yellow crystals, esp. in lignite. Also called honey-stone.First found in seams of lignite in Thuringia, Germany.
