单词 meloe
释义

meloen.

Brit. /ˈmɛləʊiː/, U.S. /ˈmɛləˌwi/
Forms: 1600s melo, 1600s– meloe, 1900s– meloë (plural). Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Meloe.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Meloe, of uncertain origin.Post-classical Latin melloes appears as a genitive in a prescription in Paracelsus Opera (1603) III. 220 (in De morbis ex Tartaro oriundis libri duo, dated 1527 on the title page), and is regarded by Mouffet (see quots. 16581, 16582) as identical with Meloe . It may originate in a coinage by Paracelsus, perhaps arbitrary (compare nostoc n.) or perhaps < ancient Greek μηλο- (in μηλολόνθη cockchafer: see Melolontha n.) + -οη , after names such as Βερόη (see Beroe n.).
Entomology.
Any of various oil beetles, spec. of the genus Meloe. Now usually (in form Meloe): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 419.Quot. 1650 is referring to an unrelated beetle, perhaps the cockchafer, Melolontha.
