Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with Old Saxon midgarni , Old High German mittigarni < the Germanic base of mid adj. + a Germanic base probably related to that of yarn n. (see discussion at that entry). N.E.D. (1906) enters this under midgern , a form which is apparently not otherwise attested. Eng. Dial. Dict. s.vv. midgen sb., midgerum sb. records widespread English regional use in south-western, midland, and northern counties. Printed evidence later than 1900 is rare, but spoken and handwritten examples (chiefly of the forms midgen and mudgin ) were collected in 1973–4 from the midlands and north of England (C. Upton, personal communication). Sense 2 apparently arose by confusion with midriff n. Compare note at that entry midriff n. for a possible Middle English form mydrun.
Now regional.
1. The fat surrounding the entrails of an animal; suet. Also midgen-fat. N.E.D (1906) has the additional definition ‘In modern dialect use the fat about the kidneys of a pig; leaf-lard’. This definition is not supported by Eng. Dial. Dict., s.vv. midgen sb. and midgerum sb., both of which are defined as intestinal fat; no examples of the word were recorded by Surv. Eng. Dial. under Question III. 12. 7, ‘the inner layer of fat round the kidneys of the pig’.
