Etymology: < mid-Lent n. + -ing suffix1, probably after mothering n.1 N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (midle·ntiŋ) /mɪdˈlɛntɪŋ/.
Obsolete.
The custom of visiting one's parents and giving them presents on mid-Lent Sunday. Cf. mothering n.1 1.
