单词 medicament
释义

medicamentn.

Brit. /mᵻˈdɪkəm(ə)nt/, /ˈmɛdᵻkəm(ə)nt/, U.S. /məˈdɪkəm(ə)nt/, /ˈmɛdəkəˌmɛnt/
Forms: late Middle English medycament, late Middle English– medicament, 1500s medicamente, 1500s medycamente; Scottish pre-1700 mendicament (probably transmission error), pre-1700 1800s– medicament.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French medicament; Latin medicāmentum.
Etymology: < Middle French medicament (1314 in Old French; French médicament ) or its etymon classical Latin medicāmentum curative substance, remedy < medicārī (see medicate v.) + -mentum -ment suffix. Compare Italian medicamento medical treatment (a1276), medicine, remedy (a1342), Spanish medicamento medicine, remedy (1490), Portuguese medicamento medicine, remedy (17th cent.), German Medikament (late 15th cent.). N.E.D. (1906) and Webster (1911) give the pronunciations /mɪˈdɪkəmənt/ and /ˈmɛdɪkəmənt/. Pronunciation with stress on the initial syllable is found in Johnson and in most 19th-cent. dictionaries; it is given as an alternative in D. Jones Everyman's Eng. Pronouncing Dict. (from the 1st ed. of 1917 to the revised 15th ed. of 1997). Pronunciation with antepenultimate stress seems first to be recorded in the late 19th cent.
